SITE SELF ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING DATA

Environmental compliance and performance

Visy is committed to minimizing the impact of our operations on the environment and the community. We operate our plants in accordance with all relevant legislation and licence conditions as a minimum and strive to continually improve our performance and minimise our impacts on the environment. Visy has a corporate Integrated Management System which provides the framework for the management of safety and environmental hazards and compliance obligations.

Environmental Monitoring and Management Plans

Visy's major sites in NSW operate under site specific development approvals and environmental protection licences issued by the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment (NSWDPIE) and NSW Environmental Protection Agency (NSWEPA). The approval conditions describe the specific compliance and performance requirements. Some of these conditions require Visy to prepare site environmental management plans and undertake monitoring to measure environmental performance and publish this information on the company website. Visy uses the structure of its Integrated Management System and site based hazard registers to meet these obligations.

Visy Pulp and Paper Tumut NSW

Visy Tumut, is a pulp and paper mill facility located in Tumut producing high-quality Kraft paper for domestic and export markets. The site has a comprehensive environmental monitoring program that monitors emissions from its operations to air, water and land. Monthly reports that summarise emissions data, exceedances and/or correction logs are published and attached to this webpage below.

Visy Tumut Environmental Management Plans required under the development approval conditions are located here.

Visy Paper Smithfield NSW

Visy Paper Smithfield operates two paper manufacturing facilities that produce packaging grade papers from recycled paper and cardboard. Thermal energy required for the process is supplied from the site’s two natural gas fired boilers. Combustion emissions from the boilers are emitted to atmosphere via a combined Discharge stack. Emissions testing from the stack is undertaken annually in accordance with the Licence. An annual summary of stack testing results is published and attached to this webpage below.

Visy’s Tumut and Smithfield facilities operate under an Environmental Management System that is independently certified to ISO 14001. The environmental monitoring data is analysed by the trained and experienced operational personnel as part of the regular review of the site's environmental performance under this system.

Visy Recycling Alexandria NSW

Visy Recycling operate a dry recyclables facility in Alexandria that receives fully commingled recyclable material from kerbside collections and paper and cardboard from commercial collections. These recyclables are destined for resource recovery into separate material streams of paper/cardboard, plastics, metals and glass. The paper/cardboard is sent to Visy’s paper mills.

Visy’s Alexandria facility uses the corporate Integrated Management System and site hazard register to establish the framework for effective environmental management. This site also has environmental management plans that provide detail around this framework as required by its development approval.

Visy Paper Albury NSW

The Visy Paper Albury mill facility located in Albury NSW, is currently a non-production site, although it is being used for maintenance and storage activities. The site has an active Environment Protection Licence and environmental monitoring program that monitors water, soil and groundwater.
